Free Music Festival Tomorrow

Forget “American Idol.” If you really want to catch tomorrow’s stars today, you can do it right here in Philly – on the cheap.

The Annual All Philadelphia High School Music Festival will be presented on Thursday, April 16, at The Kimmel Center for Performing Arts Verizon Hall at 7:30 pm. The Festival, which features the all-city band, orchestra and choir, is a free event sponsored by the School District of Philadelphia and the Office of Teaching and Learning. Secret Freebies (Pssst….Pass It On)

There are freebies all around, if you just know where to look. And if you don’t know where to look, I’m gonna tell ya! Here are some secret freebies for you artsy types:

  • Check out the Curtis Institute of Music on Locust Street, where you can catch rising stars of the music scene at the free student recital series held most Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings. Call 215-893-5261 to learn more.
  • Catch the show before it officially opens – for free – at the Arden Theatre. Their theatre company, dedicated to making theater accessible to the masses, opens the doors free of charge to the final dress rehearsal before each mainstage performance. Students with ID can catch a regular performance for just $5 with ID. Call for information 215-922-1122.
  • Listen to your music in style at the Kimmel Center for Performing Arts, which offers a Free at the Kimmel series featuring musical performances, dance and artist chats. Or go on a free building and theater tour, offered every Tuesday through Sunday at 1 pm. 215-670-2327.
  • Want to add a little culture to your shopping? Then head over to Macy’s in Center City, where you can bargain hunt to the swells of its 28,5000-pipe organ. Now a national landmark, the organ was first heard at the 1904 St. Louis World Fair - and still plays free 45 minute concerts daily.
